About NILD(Kolkata) Library:
 
The Library & Information Services section was established in 1978 to act as an aid for the development of research and training in Orthopaedically Handicapped.
      The Library constitutes a major resource for learning, teaching and research. The Library has created computerized database on documents of orthpaedically Handicapped. Internet Service facility is also available in this division. It also provides Reprographic Service (Xerox) against a reasonable charge. Current Awareness Services (CAS) on selected topics in the field of disability & rehabilitation is prepared by the Library & Information Service Section on monthly basis. Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service has also been introduced (monthly) on five subjects. These are: (i) Physiotherapy, (ii) Occupational Therapy, (iii) Orthopedics & PMR, (iv) Prosthetics & Orthotics and (v) Socio-Economic Rehabilitation. Abstracts of the articles written on the reputed journals or available online are collected and printed. The digital copy of CAS & SDI services are send to the e-mail addresses of our enlisted readers. Loose Journals and reference books are available to all within the library reading room.
 
The Library is used by the students of BPT, BOT, BPO, MPT, MOT, MPO and other courses conducted by NIOH. The library is also used by the Teachers, Researchers, and Staff members on NIOH as well as the outsiders obtaining necessary permission.
 
 The Library remains open during all days except three National Gazetted Holidays. It has open access. The reading room facility is made available to both inside and outside readers. The Library also gives its reference service through direct reference tools and text service for advancement of learning. It has the necessary infrastructure and facilities including electronic information systems to meet the requirements of all students / researchers / faculty members of the Institute and outside people.
 The book collection is classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), while the Catalogue Code (AACR-2) is used for cataloguing.
 
Function and Services:
The library has a special responsibility to keep its clientele up-to-date and intellectually stimulated by providing pertinent literature, not only in areas of immediate concern, but also in areas of emerging and developing importance within the scope of the library; and by contributing to the preservation; transmission, and accessibility of new knowledge. It extends one of the most liberal usage facilities in the region -- all potential users have direct access to the shelves of the books and journals and offers extensive reprographic services to users from all over India.
Basic Services are:
a]       Reference Service : Reference enquiries answered and user help provided through literature search. Users are also assisted to search information through internet.
b]       Referral Services : Direct / advise readers to the probable source of their required information if  his/her query/information is not satisfied.
c]       Inter - Library – Loan : LIS has institutional membership of British Council     Library and American Information Resource Centre, Kolkata where books are   borrowed on the subjects of readers’ interest.
d]       Document delivery service: Photocopies supplied to readers.
e]       Circulation: Books and bound journals are issued.
f]      Bibliographic Service: Subject list prepared on specific demand.
g]      Computerized Database: Developing two databases on books & periodical   
Through library software package developed by WEBEL.
h]       Current Awareness Services (CAS): on selected topics in the field of           disability & rehabilitation is prepared on monthly basis and disseminated     through email.
i]        News clipping Services: Collects all notice, advertisement, news etc. published in news papers/magazines date wise and prepare CD of the same.
j]        INTERNET services: Broadband internet connection is available in the Reading Room of Library and all library users can use it free of cost.

l]        Information Browsing through LAN: Data available in Local Area Network can   be accessed from library and the backup files are stored in the Server.
m]      Information Consolidation Products: Monthly Report and a Newsletter prepared by the LIS every month. The Monthly Report consisting information on the NIOH activities is forwarded to the Ministry.

It has vast collection of books and journals. Both books and non-books materials (CD’s) are available here. Its present collection is as follows (as on 12.02.2008).
