Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the branch of modern science that deals with the diseases and disorders by physical modalities. It is not merely application of physical modalities, but includes evaluation, assessment, planning and application, re-assessment, modification of management plan for preventing, alleviating and limiting acute and chronic movement dysfunction and physical disability. It promotes physical fitness, facilitates healing alleviation of pain by modulating physiological responses using physical agents, exercises and manipulation.

Objectives:
 

 To develop manpower in the field of rehabilitation by undertaking long term program of 4 ½ years BPT course and short term courses for qualified therapists and other health and rehabilitation professionals.
Evaluate, assess, plan and execute physical therapy treatment to patients attending the department.  
To offer education, training, work-adjustment and such other rehabilitation services as the society may deem fit to disabled persons with associated problems.
To undertake Research activities.

1. Academic Activity :
Long-term courses:
 

  • Bachelors degree course in Physiotherapy (BPT) of 4 ½ years duration with intake capacity of 30 candidates. The minimum educational qualification for the entry is 50% marks at 10+2 level   with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This course is affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
  • Masters degree course in Physiotherapy (MPT- Orthopaedics) of 2 years duration with intake capacity of 4 candidates. The minimum educational qualification for the entry is 50% marks at BPT. This course is affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
Apart from classroom lectures, clinical and practical demonstrations, regular seminars, case presentations, journal discussions, etc. are also arranged for BPT students, interns & MPT students
Students after completing their B.P.T. course are successfully placed in different hospitals/Institutes/Rehabilitation centers/NGO within the country and abroad.


 
 
Admission Procedure:
Admissions are held through a national level entrance test for BPT and MPT. The Admission Notice usually published in the leading Newspapers or Employment News in the month of May-June every year. The session usually starts from July-August. Detailed information may be obtained from the Institute.

Short term courses:
Department of Physiotherapy conducts short orientation courses for qualified Physiotherapists of the country and for the persons with disabilities and their family members also. The participants are paid TA and DA as per Government rules.
 

 Higher Studies :
After the completion of post graduation option of Ph.D. is also available in India & abroad.
Job of a physiotherapist:
Physiotherapists are those who are qualified at the professional level after the completion of IAP recognized 4 ½ years of bachelor degree course and registered with Indian association of Physiotherapists (IAP).
Physiotherapists work with persons with physical disability like stroke, spinal cord injuries, amputation, childhood deformities, cerebral palsy, arthritis and many other bodily dysfunctions resulted from diseases & injury.
They work with their patients residual abilities and help them to achieve the things which are most important to lead their life.
 
2. Clinical Physiotherapy Services:
 
The department of P.T. renders services to both out and in patients. Patients are allotted to therapists who evaluate, assess and plan out the treatment and execute the therapy. Difficult and complicated cases are discussed in the departmental meetings and therapeutic measures appropriate for them are given. Suitable “Home exercise programmes” are advised to patients.
